DRIVING SLEET HAMMERED AT THE LEADED WINDOWS OF THE centuries-old thatched cottage like the hands of a million dead souls. Inside, huge logs crackled and split in the open fireplace. The small beamed living room seemed the cosiest place on earth. The soothing voice of Leadbelly croaked softly on the stereo, and Marianne stretched out luxuriantly on the rug in front of the fire while Mario put on a few more chestnuts. Upstairs her mother told one of her marvellous stories to little Nicholas. It was Boxing Day, and everything in the world was right.

The ’phone rang, and Marianne went into the dining room to answer it. “Happy Christmas,” said Mick. “I’m down at Redlands with Keith, and I’d like to drive up to give you a little present.” It seemed silly for him to drive so far, but he was insistent, and she agreed. After all, they weren’t children, they could still be friends and it was about time he met Mario. Mick had flown straight to Switzerland to see his bankers after Altamont and then on to London to arrange a quick series of concerts. All sixty-five hundred tickets for the shows – two at the Lyceum and two at the Saville – had sold out within half-an-hour. He had telephoned Marianne in Rome to remind her perfunctorily that the two of them had to appear at Marlborough Street Magistrates Court on December 19 to hear the final result of the drug bust from the beginning of the year. And when she flew into Heathrow, he met her in a chauffeur driven limousine. But she had been adamant. It was over. She didn’t love him any more, and her life was with Mario. Mick had been preoccupied with preparation for the London shows and the inquests on Altamont, and had seemed to accept her decision.

So what on earth did he want now?, she wondered. He arrived in his Bentley at about ten in the evening and gave her her present: a tiny, ornate Georgian silver snuffbox filled with the finest pharmaceutical cocaine. There was nothing Marianne wanted more. Mario had given her valuable jewellery and clothes, but she always left them lying around and lost them; material objects meant nothing to her. But coke, now that was something else.

She snorted some and felt that familiar euphoric rush of happiness and well-being that brought back all the memories of the good times. Jagger was beautiful, his hair shone and he looked like a lithe boy of eighteen. He snorted some coke, too, and they giggled together; they had so much in common, were so close, and she could feel nothing but relief at being near him again. She wanted to be squeezed in his arms, for him to take her to bed with all the passion of the early days. He had always had this overwhelming effect on her, and she knew she could never have broken up with him if he had not been thousands of miles away.
